Common Kitchen Layouts

We've broken down the main types of kitchen layouts and how they can work in different spaces.

Straight Line

The most space efficient kitchen layout, which requires only one wall for cabinetry. Ideal for small spaces, like apartments or townhouses or any room where space is limited.

U-Shape

Ideal for maximising cabinetry in an available space. Works best in larger spaces, though can give flexibility to a smaller space too.

Galley

Another good option for kitchens where space is limited. Cabinets are laid out on opposite sides of the space, leaving a central work space. This could be cabinetry on two opposite walls, or by combining a straight wall of cabinets with an island or breakfast bar.

Open Plan

Ideal for large spaces, where the kitchen is part of a bigger living space. Usually incorporates wall cabinetry alongside open-end or wraparound benches, and can include a breakfast bar.

L-Shape

Works well in larger spaces, where cabinets can be positioned along two adjacent walls. Can be combined with an island or breakfast bar, or incorporate a dining table to fill out the space.
